Jerusalem-based Aseel Shalut has always been passionate about advocating and working towards positive social change in her home city. As a first step, Aseel decided to put her background in social work and psychology to the test and began to work on a project that would benefit the youngest generation by supporting new parents on their journey to raising happy, healthy, and confident children.
The project, My Child – My Mirror, will tap into the power and outreach of social media platforms to create a community of support of young parents navigating the world of early childhood development. Via a series of Instagram posts and educational videos, My Child - My Mirror will explore a range of topics that revolve around childhood development. Topics include techniques to promote a child's self-esteem and foster confidence, interactions between children and their surroundings, how to teach your child to overcome negative behavior, and others.
“Without access to a community of support, new parents can become overwhelmed raising a child. There are so many factors that can negatively affect the long-term emotional well-being of a child if overlooked. My Child - My Mirror provides the resources and community of support for new parents to connect with other caregivers and experts to ask questions and learn about the latest in childhood development and care. My project creates a safe space to get educated via relatable and easy-to-understand digital content specifically developed and curated for parents by parents and experts,” says Aseel.
However, having such an intricate project and realizing its potential can fall short for new founders like Aseel. This is why MENACatalyst’s latest GIZ funded program, Empowering Youth Through Digital Skills Development, is so important to the youth of Jerusalem. The program offers the city’s youth the game-changing opportunity to acquire a practical set of business development and digital skills, as well as the mentorship needed to create an online venture.
Aseel soon joined MENACatalyst’s program and participated in a series of transformational courses such as life skills, English for business communication, and business and marketing strategy development. After participating in said courses and benefiting from ongoing one-to-one mentorship, Aseel has acquired the tools and support to realize her project idea and launch, My Child – My Mirror.
Looking to the future, Aseel aims to create a My Child - My Mirror mobile application that will help connect new parents to a network of professionals for on-demand virtual guidance and group workshops to help raise awareness about relevant childhood development issues.
