Entrepreneurship in Hebron Feature: Asma Zughayer Founder of Asma Design

The enterprising youth of Hebron is always coming up with innovative ways to tap into their talent and overcome deepening economic inequalities impacting far too many young Palestinians. For Hebron native Asma Zughayer, it wasn't even a question of pursuing her passion for all things crafty it was an economic lifeline.
Born and raised in the ancient city of Hebron, Zughayer, a professional graphic design artist suffered from the same fate thousands of young Palestinians are faced with, a stagnating market economy that has systematically resulted in the scarcity of jobs, and widespread underemployment.
For Zughayer, it all began as a hobby, crafting crochet pieces that caused friends and families to stop and take notice. “My love for crochet started as a hobby, but over the years grew into so much more. I would make these fun little crochet accessories and bags for my friends and family, and they loved them, so I decided why not take the next step and set up a small online shop where I can share my crafts with the world,” she says.
Asma Design was soon after established. Today the e-shop includes an array of unique and timeless crochet embellished clothing items, bags, scarves, wall-hangings, and fun little accessories that appeals to all ages. However, Zughayer tells us that what keeps customers coming back is her signature bag collection, which is fast becoming Asma Design’s claim to fame. Furthermore, all items are handmade with the utmost care, attention to detail, and with materials purchased from local vendors “When you shop with us you are getting a piece of art made with love, care, and hope, which is what keeps us going here at Asma Design,” she says.
Since then, Zughayer has been working tirelessly on expanding her online shop’s offerings, but most importantly, developing her business skills and financial capabilities to improve the prospects of her growing enterprise. To this effect, Zughayer has joined MENACatalyst latest GIZ funded entrepreneurial support program to learn from Palestine’s leading business enablers and industry partners, as well as to benefit from exclusive mentorship sessions and training opportunities.
While Zughayer is eager to take her enterprise to the next level, she wants to share her story to inspire other Palestinian self-starters to take a chance on their own creativity and innovation. Zughayer further explains, “It is very important for me to transform Asma Design into a household name, to show other Palestinian women that they have what it takes to step up and make a name for themselves on their own terms.”
