H2O Farms - Founder Basel Amarna

As the Palestinian landscape continues to undergo major urban transformations land and resources have become scarce. Basel Amarna an agronomist from the Palestinian city of Jeneen, currently works to address the scarcity of resources and space through his company H2O Farms. Basel’s passion for innovative agricultural technology has led him to participate in agricultural and environmental conferences both regionally and internationally.

H2O Farms utilizes hydroponic technology as a sustainable method to efficiently cultivate crops preserving much needed space and resources, Basel explains, “H2O Farms is an environmentally friendly solution that uses the least amount of space and needs eighty percent less water for crop production which does not use harmful chemicals or pesticides that damages soil and the quality of crops.” H2O Farms’ efficient use of space appeals to Palestinian’s living in cities who wish to have their own vegetable garden but do not have the space, for example in apartments that lack in space one meter equipped with H2O Farms equipment can produce two hundred plants.

However, while the hydroponic technology utilized by H2O Farms as well as the innovative nutrient solution developed by Basel have the potential to change the face of Palestinian agriculture, the lack of awareness about alternative agricultural methods remains an important issue that Basel works towards redressing, he states, “Hydroponics is relatively new throughout the region, that is why I actively work to increase awareness and mainstream hydroponic technology through consultancy services, trainings for farmers, agronomists as well as university and school students.”

Basel’s goal is to continue to develop and license his hydroponic farming solutions H2O Farms as well as patent his innovative environmentally friendly nutrient solution. Basil aims to take H2O Farms to the next level and with the right amount of funding will be able to expand his operations and purchase equipment to continue to develop and implement hydroponic farming systems which utilize his innovative nutrient solutions.

Finally, Basil expresses, “I aim to go regional and take H2O Farms to countries that need an efficient environmental solution that utilizes innovative technology to produce more with less.” He continues, “I wish to change the landscape of Palestinian agriculture and inspire Palestinians to utilize innovative technology to revive agriculture to support the wellbeing and livelihoods of thousands of Palestinians.”
